To improve health, people must also maintain a healthy lifestyle. This means leading a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding unhealthy and harmful substances such as tobacco smoke, alcohol, and drugs. The American Heart Association emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables for overall health and a well-balanced exercise program as part of a healthy lifestyle. Likewise, the Canadian Mental Health Association has pointed out the need for a healthy lifestyle as the major contributor to mental illness. People who engage in hazardous occupations such as asbestos mining and automobile manufacturing also face the risk of developing mental illness.

One way is through weight control, as it has been shown that obesity can lead to serious medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Along with practicing a balanced diet and regular exercise, people can reduce their risk of developing these kinds of diseases by losing weight. Along with improving their overall health, they may also prevent other illnesses from developing as a result of their lifestyle.
