In addition to having high-tech surveillance systems and a host of other security measures, modern casinos use technology to ensure fairness of their games. In some cases, such as in baccarat and roulette, this includes having the chips have a microcircuit so that they can be tracked minute-by-minute; or utilizing an electronic system to monitor the speed of the ball on the dice. Casinos also frequently give out complimentary goods and services to gamblers who are considered to be good customers, such as free rooms, meals, tickets to shows or even limo service and airline tickets. These items are known as comps.

This movie lays out an intricate web of corruption in Las Vegas with its tendrils reaching into politics, the Teamsters union, the Chicago mob and the Midwest mafia. While it is a drama with no clear heroes or heroines, the characters are all mired in violence and betrayal. Joe Pesci, who was outstanding in Goodfellas, is brilliant as the ruthless Nicky, and Sharon Stone gives her best performance.
