The game of Poker has been around for centuries and it is a popular card game in many countries. There are many different ways of playing poker and it is important to understand the rules before you play.
The basic objective of the game is to extract maximum value from your winning hands, and minimise losses on losing ones. This is called min-max strategy.
Players are required to place a mandatory bet into the pot (representing money, for which poker is played) before being dealt their cards. This bet is known as a blind bet and it is placed by the players to the left of the dealer. The player may raise the blind bet, or pass and fold, depending on the variant of poker being played.
Each player has 2 personal cards which form their hand. There are also 5 community cards that everyone has a chance of using to make a better hand. Depending on the rules of the game, after the betting round is over the player can draw replacement cards for their personal ones.
The winner of a showdown is the one who has the best combination of 5 cards. A straight contains five cards of consecutive rank, a flush contains any 5 cards of the same suit, and a full house has 3 matching cards of 1 rank and 2 matching cards of another rank. A pair consists of two cards of the same rank, while three of a kind is made up of 3 matching cards of any rank.
